Bridges for a Just Community

In keeping with a strategic plan that called for a stronger focus on reaching young people, Bridges for a Just Community (formerly the National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Cincinnati) sought to collaborate or acquire Public Allies, a leadership development program for young adults age 18 to 30.  For guidance on executing a successful merger, Bridges turned to Smith Beers Yunker and Company.

Senior Counselor Penny Pensak headed the Smith Beers Yunker team that created a roadmap to ensure the two organizations were appropriately aligned and compatible in terms of mission, strategy, and operations.  The team also evaluated the synergy of programs and staff as well as the fiscal health of Public Allies.

According to Bridges Executive Director Robert “Chip” Harrod, the insight provided by Smith Beers Yunker was of “critical value to the process. Penny’s contributions were especially helpful in preparing our board for the decision to go forward. She helped us interpret the dynamics of the transaction and prepare a presentation for our board that was clear and non-threatening. Her advice carried a lot of weight with our board members, who reached a unanimous decision in favor of the merger.”

“The counsel of Smith Beers Yunker ensured that we did our due diligence prior to committing to this collaboration,” adds Harrod. “We were very pleased with the service and counsel we received and I would recommend them to any nonprofit considering a collaborative relationship.”
