Capital Humane Society

A stalled capital campaign had created tension and disenchantment among volunteer leaders and staff of the Capital Humane Society in Lincoln, Nebraska. Realizing that they not only needed to revitalize their board of directors, but also attract strong leadership to move the campaign forward, CHS called upon Smith Beers Yunker & Co. to conduct a full-scale leadership development program.

“Our board members were well-intentioned, but had little expertise in raising major capital funds,” says CHS board chairman Bob Moyer. “Through some very well organized and professionally handled retreats, facilitated by Jim Yunker, we were able to get everyone working together again and moving in the same direction. It was immediately obvious to us that, in Jim Yunker, we had connected with a real expert. The materials were excellent, but what impressed me more was the friendly and personable way in which he handled the group.

“Our board members responded very well to Jim’s low-key approach because it allowed each of us to work through our own feelings and thoughts. We had very good attendance and we all felt quite good afterward. As a result, we’ve stopped questioning each other’s judgment and are working together again with renewed enthusiasm.”

Bob Downey, Capital Humane Society’s executive director, tells that Smith Beers Yunker was recommended by another non-profit in Lincoln. “They had been very pleased with the counsel they received and, of course, we’ve not been disappointed.”

“We’re very impressed with the knowledge, organizational ability, and “people” skills of Jim Yunker. He is able to work with people of all types and has been instrumental in helping us focus on the role our leaders and staff need to play in conducting a successful capital campaign.”
